What It,s ....GALUNGAN IN BALI ISLAND ?

What It's ..Galungan in Bali Island.

Here in Bali we are on the eve of an important day
Galungan is a Balinese holiday that occurs every 210 days and lasts for 10 days. Kuningan is the last day of the holiday. Galungan means "When the Dharma is winning." During this holiday the Balinese gods visit the Earth and leave on Kuningan.
is a ten-day festival celebrated throughout the island. The gods and deified ancestors are invited to descend from heaven. Penjor— tall, decorated bamboo poles—are raised in front of each house and temple to represent fertility.
Galungan in Bali island is the celebration of the dominance of dharma (good) over adharma (evil) and the religious holiday lasts for three days.
Although Galungan falls on a Wednesday, most Balinese will begin their Galungan ‘holiday’ the day before, The first day is called penampahan. On this day, Balinese Hindus prepare all the offerings and decorations needed for galungan day.
where the family is seen to be busily preparing offerings and cooking for the next day. While the women of the household have been busy for days before creating beautifully woven ‘banten‘ (offerings made from young coconut fronds), the men of village usually wake up well before dawn to join with their neighbours to slaughter a pig unlucky enough to be chosen to help celebrate this occasion. Then the finely diced pork is mashed to a pulp with a grinding stone, and molded onto sate sticks that have been already prepared by whittling small sticks of bamboo.
They also prepare a lot food, including lawar (spicy vegetables normally mixed with raw blood). In fact, well before this day, people have already started making cakes and slaughtering the pig needed for the pig dish. These days are called penyekeban and penyajaan.
On galungan morning, the whole family prays together in their family temple (sanggah) and then normally proceed to one of the village temples to pray and take part in a larger ceremony with other villagers. People offer thanks to God for protecting man from temptation. They then beg forgiveness for any sins they have committed in the past and also pray for spiritual peace.

The next day, manis galungan, is a time to get together with the family and catch up with more distant relatives, who may have come from far away to pray at the sanggah.
The day after Galungan is a time for a holiday, visiting friends, maybe taking the opportunity to head for the mountains for a picnic. Everyone is still seen to be in their ‘Sunday best’ as they take to the streets to enjoy the festive spirit that Galungan brings to Bali.

What It's ...NYEPI DAY IN BALI ISLAND. ?

What It's ....NYEPI  DAY ( Bali’s Day of Silence )
Nyepi is derived from the quiet (silent ) Nyepi Day is actually a celebration of New Year according to Hindu calendar / Saka calendar, which began in 78 AD. Unlike the new year celebration AD, Saka New Year in Bali begins with solitude. There are no activities as usual. However the Balinese use many different calendar systems. They have adopted the Gregorian calendar for business and government purposes. But for the endless procession of holy days, temple anniversaries, celebrations, sacred dances, building houses, wedding ceremonies, death and cremation processes and other activities that define Balinese life, they have two calendar systems. The first is the Pawukon (from the word Wuku which means week) and Sasih (which is means month). Wuku consists of 30 items starting from Sinta, the first Wuku and end up with the Watugunung the last one. The Pawukon, a 210-day ritual calendar brought over from Java in the 14th century, is a complex cycle of numerological conjunctions that provides the basic schedule for ritual activities on Bali. Sasih, a parallel system of Indian origin, is a twelve month lunar calendar that starts with the vernal equinox and is equally important in determining when to pay respect to the Gods.

The religion and culture of Bali are unique in the world, and the Balinese have preserved their traditions in spite of the island's growing tourist industry.
While many destinations offer beautiful scenery, few have the variety of Bali, and none has its unique art, culture, and natural hospitality.

PREVIEW BALI

PREVIEW BALI

WHERE IS BALI ISLAND?

The island of Bali is part of the Republic of Indonesia and is located 8 to 9 degrees south of the equator between Java in the West and Lombok and the rest of the Lesser Sunda Islands (Sumbawa, Flores, Sumba and Timor) in the East. Flying time to Jakarta is about 1.5 hours, to Singapore and Perth (Australia) 2.5 and 3 hours, to Hong Kong about 4.5 hours, and to Sydney/Melbourne about 5.5 to 6 hours.

PREVIEW BALI  - GEOGRAPHY:

The island of Bali has an area of only 5,632 square kilometers (2,175 square miles) and measures just 55 miles (90 kilometers) along the north-south axis and less than about 90 miles (140 kilometers) from East to West. Because of this it's no problem to explore the island on day tours. You can go wherever you want on the island and return to your hotel or villa in the evening.
Located only two kilometers east of Jawa, Bali's climate, flora and fauna are quite similar to its much larger neighbour. The island is famous for its beautiful landscape. A chain of six volcanoes, between 1,350 meters and 3,014 meters high, stretches from west to east. There are lush tropical forests, pristine crater lakes, fast flowing rivers and deep ravines, picturesque rice terraces, and fertile vegetable and fruit gardens. The beaches in the South consist of white sand, beaches in other parts of the island are covered with gray or black volcanic sand.
